What 44-1X means

Each side impact sensor gets polled by the SRS unit, which then waits to hear back. When the first right side sensor stops answering, Honda and Acura store 44-1X and disable deployment, since the module has lost one of the inputs it needs to decide whether a side impact is happening. Silence looks the same to the module whether the cause is a broken wire or a dead sensor.

Everything between the module and the sensor is in play. That includes the connector at the sensor, the harness running through the floor and up the pillar, the connector at the control module, and the power and ground the sensor depends on. The sensor's own position, low in the body on the passenger side, puts it where water collects.

Common causes

• A sensor connector that filled with water from a door seal or sill drain
• A latch never closed after trim, seat belt, or door sill work
• A conductor broken in the floor harness under the carpet
• Loss of power or ground to the sensor at its connector
• Terminals corroded green inside the sensor or module connector

Crash data or hardware fault?

The missing signal is a present condition, which makes 44-1X a live circuit fault. Fix the connection and the module hears the sensor again at the next self test. Crash data follows the other rule, written permanently when the system deploys and not affected by anything you repair afterward.

Does our reset clear it?

Clearing the code while the sensor is still silent accomplishes nothing, because the module retests and stores 44-1X again. Repair the circuit first. What to do next

Unplug the sensor and check the harness side for power and ground with the key on, because a sensor without a supply cannot report no matter how good it is. Look hard at the connector for moisture and corrosion while you are in there.
